What is a low budget? There is always a way to optimize your money! I personally like the Apogee products. MOTU preamps sounds rather bad to my ear (or at least compared to a same price Apogee Ensemble), M-Box is a run away because of it's amazing interferences pick up as well as a noise floor that makes you crap your pants after an hour of work... RMI has the worst after sales support and exchange programs if you have a problem with a card. Right now, I know about 3 home studios who had all the same problems with an RMI and that are 9 months deep in the warranty process... That's a full pregnancy for god's sake! M-audio is a good bang for the buck if you are on a really tight budget, but I would definitely recommend spending the right amount for an ensemble... The only downside with it is that I have no idea of the PC compatibility and integration in FL... Also, it has no MIDI I/O. But this is easily fixed by buying any other MIDI card for under 150$. My old set up was an Ensemble and an 8x8 MOTU MIDI sound card. Worked like a charm on Logic! Hope this helps!

I'm now starting my own home recording. I had a copy fl studio9 and reason4 on pc then my system crashed. Someone insisted I try the real deal, buy a mac and get logics9. My question is could you recommend to me what I would need as a beginner to get quality sound recording on a low budget?

Hi Skyler, sorry for the late answer... As you must know, asking this question, I preach for my own church... Nevertheless, I was faithful to both, once, and just like anyone who's been on both sides and has seen the difference, went back. Pro Tools is an amazing tools... When it works. It is very picky and requires the proper version of your host OS. It also tends to be incompatible with other stuff installed on your computer. In other words, if you don't have to please an external client, go with logic. Not only will you have the same kind of service, but with much better plug-ins, an amazing array of virtual instruments, a much more MIDI capable environment as well as an integrated solution, made by those who makes the platform you'll be using it on. ProTools took about 6 months to convert PT4 for Leopard when it came out... That's something you got to think about when you don't have a dedicated platform to record. If it's your everyday computer, IMHO, PT will prevent you from freely updating your machine free of risk. This is not something I take out of my hat, I recall this because it happened to me, and trust me, you don't want to have to see that icon stop bouncing without opening!
Hope this helps!

Hello,
I am about to start a home recording studio and was hoping to get some advice on what software would be the best for beginning recording (pro tools vs logic). It seems from this blog that logic would be best for me to invest in (I have a macbook).

Also, what kind of soundcard would be the best to use with Logic 9?

Thank you!
Skyler

I dumped Avid when Final Cut came out. And now Pro Tools is gone! No more service contract extortion! No more paying a 300% markup on hard drives from Avid! I sold the HD rig, bought Logic 9, an SSL converter box, Melodyne, and a cheap M Box Pro Tools Rig to convert files until I get the Solid State Logic Pro Convert program. I have not looked back! With the extra cash, I now use 2 UAD 2 cards,(quads with all of the plugs), TC Powercore, and an SSL Duende at mix. I have all the capacity of an HD 3 Accell system for less than half the cost.
